Course Description:

The topic of the presentation will focus specifically on Biophilic Design and Living Architecture – Isn’t it time your building got a life? Biophilic Design and Living Architecture.

With most of the time being spent in offices or moving within dense urban areas surrounded by tall tempered glass buildings, the obviousness of heat island effect and the raising of the overall temperature of the earth is becoming more and more apparent as each year goes by.

This presentation will go into detail about several design solutions to achieve living building systems, speaking to the essence of sustainability, along with designing and building best practices that ensure longer life cycles. “Our Living Building Design-Build Toolbox” will examine the emergent adaptation of biophilic design and living architecture, and the benefits when specifically speaking to Green Wall Facades, Living Wall Systems, Site Water Management, Green Roof Systems, and Permavoid (Blue Roofs).  Speaking to the benefits of Green Façade systems, Wire Trellis and Web-Netting, and hybrid living wall systems, we will examine what designs entail, and the benefits they bring to different typologies for buildings (eg.) Extended lifespan of a roofing membrane, promotes biodiversity, reduces surface and building temperatures, and creates an amenity in an unused space.  Our includes certified Green Roof Professionals (GRP), where a brief description of roof system options and build-up systems will be highlighted in a wide variety of project typologies across Canada demonstrating their unique design features, and then proceed into detail about our design assist process, delivery, and installation practices, and outline the maintenance program specific to each project.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Learn how to distinguish the various applications of biophilic design across all types of building typology and determine what works best for each project to not only benefit the building but also the people within and around it.
  2. Understand the design details behind a Permavoid (Blue roof) and Green Roofs and learn how they can be installed in various climates across Canada.
  3. Learn how artistic applications and living green facades can bring health & beauty to buildings inside and out.
  4. Understand what elements and best practices are applicable to ensure and help prolong the life of buildings.
