Course Description:

Join us for an in-depth exploration of the burgeoning field of mass timber construction in North America. This Continuing Education course will provide a comprehensive overview of the regulatory landscape surrounding mass timber, focusing on recent updates to the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) and the International Building Code (IBC). Through a combination of informative presentation, participants will gain valuable insights into the use of mass timber as a sustainable and innovative construction material.

Learning Objectives:

Introduction to Mass Timber: Gain a fundamental understanding of mass timber, including its various forms, types, and characteristics. Explore the unique properties of mass timber that make it an attractive option for sustainable building construction.

Canadian Building Codes (NBCC): Explore the regulatory framework governing mass timber construction in Canada, with a specific focus on the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC). Learn about recent amendments and additions to the NBCC that accommodate the use of mass timber, including specific regulations and standards applicable to mass timber structures.

Regulatory Framework in the US: Examine the regulatory landscape for mass timber construction in the United States, particularly within the framework of the International Building Code (IBC). Understand how the IBC has evolved to incorporate mass timber construction, including relevant provisions, allowances, and considerations for design, construction, and fire safety.

Case Studies: Explore real-world examples of mass timber projects, highlighting unique design and construction aspects that align with local building codes. Through case studies, gain practical insights into the application of mass timber construction.
