Chapter Update December 2021

Dear Colleagues,

We made it – another year in our journey! When I look back at the last twelve months, there are many positive accomplishments. While I could list many more, I would like to highlight these four:

  • AIA Canada Society held its Annual General Meeting for members on November 17, 2021. In addition to General Business, the Society announced the results of its Board of Officers Election for January 2022 to December 2023:

    • President – Lara Presber, AIA

    • Immediate Past President – Dr. Adam Pantelimon, Intl. Assoc. AIA, FRIBA

    • Vice President – Dora Ng, AIA

    • Secretary – Jonathan Fulcher, AIA

    • Treasurer – Vacant – Interim Appointee Stuart Howard, AIA, FRAIC

  • AIA Canada agreed to have Canadian Architect serve as the Official Magazine of the chapter for a period of five years.

  • The 2021 AIA Canada Design Awards were again a success this year. The members of the Jury met on December 16, 2021 and I am pleased to say that two projects received the “Excellence” prize, two projects a “Merit” award, three projects were awarded a “Citation” and, finally, an “Honorable Mention” was granted. The winners will be announced in the New Year.

The Chapter is grateful to this year’s jury, which was led by James Wright, FAIA, 2016-2017 AIA International president, as the Jury Chair. Wright was joined by two distinguished architects, Tolya Stonorov, AIA, Associate Director of Norwich University’s School of Architecture + Art and Associate Professor of Architecture, and Barry Johns, Hon. FAIA, AAA, FRAIC, 2011-2017 Chancellor of the College of Fellows, Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, and 2015-2019 Director of Practice, Alberta Association of Architects.

  • Finally, and most importantly, the AIA Canada Society has been officially accredited by the National office of the American Institute of Architects in Washington, DC. Sincere congratulations to the Chapter leadership and its members on reaching this significant milestone. This is definitely worth celebrating!

Yours is a resilient profession and AIA Canada is grateful for your collective perseverance, commitment, and optimism. On behalf of the AIA Canada team, we wish you a safe, healthy, and happy New Year!

Offered with best wishes,

Dr. Adam Pantelimon, FRIBA, Intl. Assoc. AIA
President 2020-21, AIA Canada
