SUMMARY:AIAISC’26 - AIA International Spring Conference: Shaping Place | March 26-28
DESCRIPTION:This year’s theme is Shaping Place\nMarch 26 – 28\nOnline\n18 LUs for AIA Members (TBC) \nShaping Place is a virtual architecture conference looking at how architects translate global insights into locally grounded\, culturally responsive\, and environmentally responsible design. For instance\, as climate pressures grow and communities face increasing demands for healthcare\, housing\, and civic infrastructure\, architects are increasingly called to integrate nature-based solutions—such as passive design strategies\, landscape-driven systems\, material stewardship\, and regenerative approaches—into the everyday practice of architecture. \nThrough built case studies\, applied research\, and leadership perspectives\, the conference examines how architects shape places that support human wellbeing\, respect cultural context\, and work in alignment with natural systems. Sessions will emphasize measurable outcomes\, user experience\, and long-term performance\, positioning sustainability and culture not as abstract ideals\, but as core responsibilities of architectural practice. \nWe look forward to a worldwide discussion on how architects respond to global insights and shape local environments! \nThis 3-day virtual conference will bring you lectures\, panel discussions\, building tours and more from around the world. Conference sessions will be hosted by the 7 International Chapters in Canada\, Europe\, Hong Kong\, Japan\, the Middle East\, Shanghai\, and the United Kingdom\, the International Sections in Latin America\, Oceania\, South Korea\, Southeast Asia\, Sub-Saharan Africa\, Taipei and more of our members worldwide! \nAttendance is free and open to all\, whether you are an AIA member or not. \nThis year\, registrants can choose to add a donation to support our work. As a non-profit organization\, all funds raised will go directly towards ongoing AIA International initiatives\, including the delivery of the Spring Conference. \nLEARN MORE >>> \nRegister today to secure your place! \nAIA International website to https://www.aiainternational.org/

SUMMARY:AIA Canada Webinar at the Global Stage – March 28 | 11:15 AM EST
DESCRIPTION:AIAI Webinar | Co-Creating Policy\, Not Just Buildings: Leadership Insights from the 800 Granville Downtown Core Revitalization \nAs part of the AIA International Spring Conference 2026\, AIA Canada Society is pleased to present a featured webinar exploring how architects are shaping cities beyond the built form.  Through the lens of Vancouver’s 800 Granville project\, this session examines how architects can influence public policy and shape the future of the built environment. We are honoured to welcome Aik Ablimit as the featured speaker\, joined by Hiroko Kobayashi\, Senior Development Planner\, City of Vancouver. \n\nSaturday\, March 28\, 202611:15 AM – 12:05 PM EST \nREGISTER \nNote: Access to the March 28 webinar is included with registration for the full conference. \nCost: FREE for AIA Members and Non-MembersCES: Estimated 1 LU for AIA Members \nPresenters \n\n  \n \nAik Ablimit\, Architect AIBC\, AIA\, NCARB\, CPHD\, LEED AP BD+C\nSenior Architect\, Senior Associate\nPerkins+Will Canada Architects Co.\nHiroko Kobayashi\, Senior Development Planner\nCity of Vancouver\n\nThe 800 Granville project serves as a powerful example of how architects can expand their influence beyond traditional design roles to become collaborators in policy development\, civic advocacy\, and urban transformation. Located in the heart of Vancouver’s Granville Entertainment District\, the project reimagines an entire downtown block of heritage buildings as a vibrant\, mixed-use cultural anchor. \nThrough the integration of arts venues\, hotel\, retail\, and rental housing\, the project demonstrates how design can drive both public benefit and economic viability. \nThis session explores how the project team worked in close partnership with City of Vancouver Planning staff to co-create policy frameworks during a pivotal moment for Granville Street. As the City developed its new Granville Street Planning Policy\, the 800 Granville team engaged in iterative working sessions that aligned design objectives with emerging municipal priorities. The collaboration preserved and revitalized five heritage buildings—including the iconic Commodore Ballroom—while introducing a precedent-setting development typology that strengthens cultural infrastructure and supports a more inclusive and lively downtown core. \nMoving beyond a conventional rezoning effort\, the process highlights the evolving leadership role of architects as policy interpreters\, facilitators of civic dialogue\, and advocates for holistic urban outcomes. Through strategic engagement\, the team helped shape policy directions that balanced cultural stewardship\, heritage values\, economic realities\, and community needs. \nBy sharing lessons from this collaborative journey\, the session provides practical insights into how architects can co-create policy\, leverage design as a form of advocacy\, and build productive partnerships with planning authorities. Participants will come away with strategies for navigating complex approvals\, aligning projects with evolving municipal frameworks\, and using integrated design processes to unlock new possibilities for urban revitalization. \n\nAbout the AIA International Conference\nThis AIA Canada webinar is part of the AIA International Spring Conference 2026 – Shaping Place\, a three-day virtual program exploring how architects around the world are innovating to shape the future of the built environment.\nConference Program\nConference Registration \nHost: AIA International\nDates: March 26–28\, 2026\nLocation: Online\nCost: Free for AIA members and non-members\nCES: Up to 18 LUs anticipated for AIA members (tbc)
