SUMMARY:AIA Canada Webinar at the Global Stage – March 28 | 11:15 AM EST
DESCRIPTION:AIAI Webinar | Co-Creating Policy\, Not Just Buildings: Leadership Insights from the 800 Granville Downtown Core Revitalization \nAs part of the AIA International Spring Conference 2026\, AIA Canada Society is pleased to present a featured webinar exploring how architects are shaping cities beyond the built form.  Through the lens of Vancouver’s 800 Granville project\, this session examines how architects can influence public policy and shape the future of the built environment. We are honoured to welcome Aik Ablimit as the featured speaker\, joined by Hiroko Kobayashi\, Senior Development Planner\, City of Vancouver. \n\nSaturday\, March 28\, 202611:15 AM – 12:05 PM EST \nREGISTER \nNote: Access to the March 28 webinar is included with registration for the full conference. \nCost: FREE for AIA Members and Non-MembersCES: Estimated 1 LU for AIA Members \nPresenters \n\n  \n \nAik Ablimit\, Architect AIBC\, AIA\, NCARB\, CPHD\, LEED AP BD+C\nSenior Architect\, Senior Associate\nPerkins+Will Canada Architects Co.\nHiroko Kobayashi\, Senior Development Planner\nCity of Vancouver\n\nThe 800 Granville project serves as a powerful example of how architects can expand their influence beyond traditional design roles to become collaborators in policy development\, civic advocacy\, and urban transformation. Located in the heart of Vancouver’s Granville Entertainment District\, the project reimagines an entire downtown block of heritage buildings as a vibrant\, mixed-use cultural anchor. \nThrough the integration of arts venues\, hotel\, retail\, and rental housing\, the project demonstrates how design can drive both public benefit and economic viability. \nThis session explores how the project team worked in close partnership with City of Vancouver Planning staff to co-create policy frameworks during a pivotal moment for Granville Street. As the City developed its new Granville Street Planning Policy\, the 800 Granville team engaged in iterative working sessions that aligned design objectives with emerging municipal priorities. The collaboration preserved and revitalized five heritage buildings—including the iconic Commodore Ballroom—while introducing a precedent-setting development typology that strengthens cultural infrastructure and supports a more inclusive and lively downtown core. \nMoving beyond a conventional rezoning effort\, the process highlights the evolving leadership role of architects as policy interpreters\, facilitators of civic dialogue\, and advocates for holistic urban outcomes. Through strategic engagement\, the team helped shape policy directions that balanced cultural stewardship\, heritage values\, economic realities\, and community needs. \nBy sharing lessons from this collaborative journey\, the session provides practical insights into how architects can co-create policy\, leverage design as a form of advocacy\, and build productive partnerships with planning authorities. Participants will come away with strategies for navigating complex approvals\, aligning projects with evolving municipal frameworks\, and using integrated design processes to unlock new possibilities for urban revitalization. \n\nAbout the AIA International Conference\nThis AIA Canada webinar is part of the AIA International Spring Conference 2026 – Shaping Place\, a three-day virtual program exploring how architects around the world are innovating to shape the future of the built environment.\nConference Program\nConference Registration \nHost: AIA International\nDates: March 26–28\, 2026\nLocation: Online\nCost: Free for AIA members and non-members\nCES: Up to 18 LUs anticipated for AIA members (tbc)

SUMMARY:AIAISC’26 - AIA International Spring Conference: Shaping Place | March 26-28
DESCRIPTION:This year’s theme is Shaping Place\nMarch 26 – 28\nOnline\n18 LUs for AIA Members (TBC) \nShaping Place is a virtual architecture conference looking at how architects translate global insights into locally grounded\, culturally responsive\, and environmentally responsible design. For instance\, as climate pressures grow and communities face increasing demands for healthcare\, housing\, and civic infrastructure\, architects are increasingly called to integrate nature-based solutions—such as passive design strategies\, landscape-driven systems\, material stewardship\, and regenerative approaches—into the everyday practice of architecture. \nThrough built case studies\, applied research\, and leadership perspectives\, the conference examines how architects shape places that support human wellbeing\, respect cultural context\, and work in alignment with natural systems. Sessions will emphasize measurable outcomes\, user experience\, and long-term performance\, positioning sustainability and culture not as abstract ideals\, but as core responsibilities of architectural practice. \nWe look forward to a worldwide discussion on how architects respond to global insights and shape local environments! \nThis 3-day virtual conference will bring you lectures\, panel discussions\, building tours and more from around the world. Conference sessions will be hosted by the 7 International Chapters in Canada\, Europe\, Hong Kong\, Japan\, the Middle East\, Shanghai\, and the United Kingdom\, the International Sections in Latin America\, Oceania\, South Korea\, Southeast Asia\, Sub-Saharan Africa\, Taipei and more of our members worldwide! \nAttendance is free and open to all\, whether you are an AIA member or not. \nThis year\, registrants can choose to add a donation to support our work. As a non-profit organization\, all funds raised will go directly towards ongoing AIA International initiatives\, including the delivery of the Spring Conference. \nLEARN MORE >>> \nRegister today to secure your place! \nAIA International website to https://www.aiainternational.org/

SUMMARY:Webinar | Beyond Net Zero: New Design Imperatives for Vibrant Community Buildings
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n \n \nAIA Canada is honoured to present: \nWebinar | Beyond Net Zero: New Design Imperatives for Vibrant Community Buildings \nPresented by Paul Fast of hcma architecture + design \nRecipient of the 2024 AIA Canada Design Award for Excellence in Architecture \nProject | təməsew̓txw Aquatic and Community Centre\, New Westminster\, British Columbia \nWednesday\, October 1\, 12:00 – 1:00 pm ET \nCES: 1 AIA LU | HSW \nCourse Number:   2025AIACS12 \nProvider Name:    AIA Canada Society \nProvider Number: 100100113 \nCourse Description \nCommunity recreation facilities – especially those with aquatics programming – are some of the municipal building portfolio’s costliest assets: to build\, to operate\, and from a greenhouse gas emissions standpoint. Yet\, the social value of these buildings is critical. They help combat loneliness\, promote health and wellness\, foster collective pride\, provide meaningful access and inclusion\, and act as safe havens in the face of natural disasters. Join Paul Fast of hcma architecture + design as he challenges the industry to think differently. Sharing new imperatives for community recreation building design\, he’ll highlight the importance of holistic and generational thinking to meet society’s complex and rapidly evolving needs. He’ll share lessons from the award-winning\, all-electric təməsew ̓ txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre – the first completed aquatic centre certified under Canada Green Building Council’s Zero Carbon Building – Design Standard. \nAs a case study\, təməsew ̓ txʷ is a model for how thoughtful design can create an environment that supports and enhances human health\, wellbeing\, and community connection. \nDemonstrating this imperative\, təməsew ̓ txʷ’s gravity-fed InBlue pool filtration and disinfection system—the first of its kind in North America—has made a significant impact on patron experience. InBlue uses a drum filter system\, which minimizes pump energy consumption by almost 50% and reduces the need for chlorine usage and creation of associated harmful byproducts\, resulting in much improved air and water quality for swimmers. Other elements\, like biophilic design\, abundant natural light\, low VOC finishes\, additional handrails for safety\, and transfer-ledges and ramps into pools all underscore how both environmental and social performance contribute to overall building performance. Reframing sustainability as more than just a carbon accounting exercise\, Paul will demonstrate a holistic approach that reflects current climate science and embraces the importance of the human experience. \nLearning Objectives \n\nExplain how new approaches to community recreation centre design can support ambitious environmental and social impact goals.\nDescribe the role of community recreation centres within municipal building portfolios and their influence on a municipality’s climate response.\nIdentify strategies for achieving Net Zero emissions in energy-intensive community recreation and aquatics facilities.\nDiscuss how community recreation centres contribute to resilience and wellbeing within the communities they serve.\n\nPresenter: \n \n“Architecture is inherently philosophical and yet relentlessly pragmatic. Somewhere in the middle\, it defines how we work\, play\, and find delight in this world. That’s the good stuff.” \nPaul is interested in creating architecture that helps to define a strong regional identity. His work is focused on reconnecting people to their environments through the considered use of material\, form\, space\, and light. \nAs a Principal\, Paul enjoys the initial stages of concept design when site\, user\, and program are defined. His careful consideration of these critical decisions helps shape the outcome of the design and building process. Paul believes transformative change can happen at any scale\, and has led projects ranging from a children’s playhouse to a complex\, $160M community recreation centre. Paul finds particular delight in discovering and working in new communities throughout the province (big and small). \nHe has led several of our Tilt initiatives including the IDSwest stage design\, Coal Harbour Deck concept and the #MoreAwesomeNow Laneway Activation. \nPaul holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and a Masters of Architecture from the University of British Columbia and gained experience abroad in Switzerland and Russia\, where he designed an orphanage for a non-profit group. When not architecting\, he can be found exploring the remotest regions of British Columbia\, or hanging out at the cabin with his wife and three boys.

SUMMARY:Webinar | SOUTH ASIAN MODERN & THE MAKING OF A NATION Louis I. Kahn’s National Assembly Complex in Dhaka\, Bangladesh
DESCRIPTION:AIA Canada is pleased to present \nSOUTH ASIAN MODERN & THE MAKING OF A NATION Louis I. Kahn’s National Assembly Complex in Dhaka\, Bangladesh \nDate: Wednesday\, April 9\, 12:00 PM ET \nTime: 12:00 – 1:0o pm ET \nCES: 1 AIA LU \nSpeaker: Dr. Nubras Samayeen \nCourse Number:   2025AIACS03 \nProvider Name:    AIA Canada Society \nProvider Number: 100100113 \nREGISTER HERE \nCourse Description \nOf the Western design professionals who played a key role in establishing modernity in South Asia\, Louis I. Kahn (1901-1974)\, the American Modernist\, is one of the most important ones. From the mid to late 20th century\, Kahn designed two key institutions in the region. One is the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad (1962-1972)\, India\, and the other is the National Assembly Complex (constructed 1963-1982) in Dhaka\, Bangladesh. Taking Kahn’s Assembly Complex in Dhaka as the focus\, this lecture will present distinctive instrumentality of architecture and landscape vis-a-vis holistic built environment\, in the formation of a nation’s identity in the post-colonial (after 1947) and post-independence (after 1971) eras. His work not only demonstrates a merging of Western modernist architecture with Eastern cultural elements\, but it also serves as a symbolic representation of a newly independent nation striving to define itself both internally and on the world stage.  While designing the Complex\, Kahn was inspired by the region’s deltaic landscape and its longstanding influences on the culture. The Complex itself appears to float on a constructed\, artificial lake and the other key buildings abut the lake\, thereby granting the entire site a sense of dynamic interplay with the lake and surrounding landscape.  Accompanying the focus on water\, there are other elements of the design that Kahn intended as nationally symbolic: the immense lawn\, the basic geometric shapes\, the gardens\, and the open plazas.  These spaces\, while vast and monumental\, are also meant to be accessible to the public\, encouraging inclusivity and fostering democratic engagement. Though many of the inspirations of the architectural design expressions came from the Western culture\, the Assembly Complex was intended as a historical and cultural emblem that would help in the formation of democracy for the newly found\, independent nation\, East Pakistan ( later Bangladesh).  Kahn therefore envisioned an amalgam of sensibilities: modernist yet traditional\, Western yet Bengali (Bangladesh’s culture)\, open yet monumental\, forward-looking yet reverential.  The final result was a magnum opus; it reflects Kahn’s vision for a national space that was open and egalitarian\, yet at the same time\, imbued with symbolic weight. Such complexity permeates not only the design but the entire post-colonial history of the country and South Asia region. \nLearning Objectives \n\nUnderstand the role of architecture in shaping national identity – Examine how Louis I. Kahn’s National Assembly Complex contributed to the post-colonial and post-independence identity of Bangladesh.\nAnalyze the integration of landscape and built form – Explore how Kahn’s design responds to Bangladesh’s deltaic geography\, incorporating water\, geometric forms\, and public spaces to create a sense of place and inclusivity.\nExamine the fusion of Western modernism with Eastern cultural influences – Investigate how Kahn blended modernist architectural principles with traditional Bengali cultural and historical elements to create a design that was both monumental and locally meaningful.\nEvaluate architecture’s role in fostering democracy and civic engagement – Discuss how the Assembly Complex’s design—through its spatial openness\, public accessibility\, and monumental symbolism—embodied democratic ideals and civic participation in a newly independent nation.\n\nJoin us for this enlightening lecture. \nSpeaker Biography \nDr. Nubras Samayeen is a scholar\, an academic\, and a practicing architect in Bangladesh. Most recently\, in 2025\, she was awarded the UC Berkeley South Asia Art & Architecture Dissertation Prize for the best dissertation on South Asian architecture. She completed her Ph.D. from the joint program of Landscape Architecture and Architecture at the University of Illinois\, Urbana-Champaign. Her dissertation titled “Architecture of the Land” investigates American modernist architect Louis I. Kahn’s National Assembly Building Complex in Dhaka\, Bangladesh. After her undergraduate degree in architecture\, she completed dual master’s degrees in architecture and urban design at the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor with distinction. She worked at various architecture firms such as Eisenman Architects\, HOK\, Beyer Blinder Belle in New York\, and ZGF in Washington DC as an architect. She also taught architecture at the University of Asia Pacific in Dhaka\, and Howard University in Washington DC. At Illinois\, her research has been supported by the Dumbarton Oaks Summer Workshop Fellowship from Harvard University\, the Kennedy and the Feil Travel Awards\, the AAUW International Fellowship\, the Humanities Research Institute Fellowship\, the Illinois Dissertation Completion Fellowship\, and the Nicholson Fellowship to study a summer at Cornell University. Among others\, her most recent publications are: “Space to Breathe: George Floyd\, BLM Plaza and the Monumentalization of Divided American Urban Landscapes\,” and “The Landscape of 1971: Museums\, Memories\, and the Aesthetics of Bangladeshi Nationalism.” In 2023\, her work – Vernacularization of a Democratic Landscape\, received the best Students Research Award from Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA). While Dr Samayeen is preparing for her book on Kahn’s landscape\, she is currently working on a forthcoming book chapter\, “Shifting Spatial Aesthetics and Mutating National Identity” to an anthology titled\, A World of Contradictions: Culture and Identity in the Roiling of Globalization to be published in 2025.

Relying on static models and reactive maintenance\, they miss opportunities for proactive interventions that could reduce downtime and extend asset lifecycles. Disconnected data sources\, inconsistent formats\, and cumbersome workflows impair collaboration\, slow change management\, and create communication gaps among stakeholders\, ultimately delaying decision-making and stifling innovation. Without a centralized\, real-time platform\, it becomes difficult to integrate technologies like IoT solutions\, machine learning\, and predictive analytics\, leaving organizations at a competitive disadvantage. \nIn this session\, we’ll explore a solution: creating a single source of truth that consolidates all data into a visualized format\, empowering teams to make timely\, informed decisions. We’ll examine how to assess current data sources\, identify gaps\, and connect disparate systems into a cohesive data model. By integrating SQL\, Revit\, and IoT data into Autodesk Tandem\, resulting in a data-rich Digital Twin\, teams gain critical insights for proactive maintenance\, reduced downtime\, and better decision-making. Finally\, we’ll discuss how leveraging technology for remote asset monitoring and accurate data-capture optimizes performance\, improves efficiency\, reduces costs\, and ensures organizations stay competitive in an ever-changing landscape. \nSpeaker Biography \nBrent Mauti is a a Principal and the Chief Technology Officer at Turner Fleischer Architects\, bringing over two decades of expertise in technology-driven roles at IBI Group and CH2M HILL.
