SUMMARY:AIA Canada Webinar at the Global Stage – March 28 | 11:15 AM EST
DESCRIPTION:AIAI Webinar | Co-Creating Policy\, Not Just Buildings: Leadership Insights from the 800 Granville Downtown Core Revitalization \nAs part of the AIA International Spring Conference 2026\, AIA Canada Society is pleased to present a featured webinar exploring how architects are shaping cities beyond the built form.  Through the lens of Vancouver’s 800 Granville project\, this session examines how architects can influence public policy and shape the future of the built environment. We are honoured to welcome Aik Ablimit as the featured speaker\, joined by Hiroko Kobayashi\, Senior Development Planner\, City of Vancouver. \n\nSaturday\, March 28\, 202611:15 AM – 12:05 PM EST \nREGISTER \nNote: Access to the March 28 webinar is included with registration for the full conference. \nCost: FREE for AIA Members and Non-MembersCES: Estimated 1 LU for AIA Members \nPresenters \n\n  \n \nAik Ablimit\, Architect AIBC\, AIA\, NCARB\, CPHD\, LEED AP BD+C\nSenior Architect\, Senior Associate\nPerkins+Will Canada Architects Co.\nHiroko Kobayashi\, Senior Development Planner\nCity of Vancouver\n\nThe 800 Granville project serves as a powerful example of how architects can expand their influence beyond traditional design roles to become collaborators in policy development\, civic advocacy\, and urban transformation. Located in the heart of Vancouver’s Granville Entertainment District\, the project reimagines an entire downtown block of heritage buildings as a vibrant\, mixed-use cultural anchor. \nThrough the integration of arts venues\, hotel\, retail\, and rental housing\, the project demonstrates how design can drive both public benefit and economic viability. \nThis session explores how the project team worked in close partnership with City of Vancouver Planning staff to co-create policy frameworks during a pivotal moment for Granville Street. As the City developed its new Granville Street Planning Policy\, the 800 Granville team engaged in iterative working sessions that aligned design objectives with emerging municipal priorities. The collaboration preserved and revitalized five heritage buildings—including the iconic Commodore Ballroom—while introducing a precedent-setting development typology that strengthens cultural infrastructure and supports a more inclusive and lively downtown core. \nMoving beyond a conventional rezoning effort\, the process highlights the evolving leadership role of architects as policy interpreters\, facilitators of civic dialogue\, and advocates for holistic urban outcomes. Through strategic engagement\, the team helped shape policy directions that balanced cultural stewardship\, heritage values\, economic realities\, and community needs. \nBy sharing lessons from this collaborative journey\, the session provides practical insights into how architects can co-create policy\, leverage design as a form of advocacy\, and build productive partnerships with planning authorities. Participants will come away with strategies for navigating complex approvals\, aligning projects with evolving municipal frameworks\, and using integrated design processes to unlock new possibilities for urban revitalization. \n\nAbout the AIA International Conference\nThis AIA Canada webinar is part of the AIA International Spring Conference 2026 – Shaping Place\, a three-day virtual program exploring how architects around the world are innovating to shape the future of the built environment.\nConference Program\nConference Registration \nHost: AIA International\nDates: March 26–28\, 2026\nLocation: Online\nCost: Free for AIA members and non-members\nCES: Up to 18 LUs anticipated for AIA members (tbc)

SUMMARY:Webinar | Beyond Net Zero: New Design Imperatives for Vibrant Community Buildings
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n \n \nAIA Canada is honoured to present: \nWebinar | Beyond Net Zero: New Design Imperatives for Vibrant Community Buildings \nPresented by Paul Fast of hcma architecture + design \nRecipient of the 2024 AIA Canada Design Award for Excellence in Architecture \nProject | təməsew̓txw Aquatic and Community Centre\, New Westminster\, British Columbia \nWednesday\, October 1\, 12:00 – 1:00 pm ET \nCES: 1 AIA LU | HSW \nCourse Number:   2025AIACS12 \nProvider Name:    AIA Canada Society \nProvider Number: 100100113 \nCourse Description \nCommunity recreation facilities – especially those with aquatics programming – are some of the municipal building portfolio’s costliest assets: to build\, to operate\, and from a greenhouse gas emissions standpoint. Yet\, the social value of these buildings is critical. They help combat loneliness\, promote health and wellness\, foster collective pride\, provide meaningful access and inclusion\, and act as safe havens in the face of natural disasters. Join Paul Fast of hcma architecture + design as he challenges the industry to think differently. Sharing new imperatives for community recreation building design\, he’ll highlight the importance of holistic and generational thinking to meet society’s complex and rapidly evolving needs. He’ll share lessons from the award-winning\, all-electric təməsew ̓ txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre – the first completed aquatic centre certified under Canada Green Building Council’s Zero Carbon Building – Design Standard. \nAs a case study\, təməsew ̓ txʷ is a model for how thoughtful design can create an environment that supports and enhances human health\, wellbeing\, and community connection. \nDemonstrating this imperative\, təməsew ̓ txʷ’s gravity-fed InBlue pool filtration and disinfection system—the first of its kind in North America—has made a significant impact on patron experience. InBlue uses a drum filter system\, which minimizes pump energy consumption by almost 50% and reduces the need for chlorine usage and creation of associated harmful byproducts\, resulting in much improved air and water quality for swimmers. Other elements\, like biophilic design\, abundant natural light\, low VOC finishes\, additional handrails for safety\, and transfer-ledges and ramps into pools all underscore how both environmental and social performance contribute to overall building performance. Reframing sustainability as more than just a carbon accounting exercise\, Paul will demonstrate a holistic approach that reflects current climate science and embraces the importance of the human experience. \nLearning Objectives \n\nExplain how new approaches to community recreation centre design can support ambitious environmental and social impact goals.\nDescribe the role of community recreation centres within municipal building portfolios and their influence on a municipality’s climate response.\nIdentify strategies for achieving Net Zero emissions in energy-intensive community recreation and aquatics facilities.\nDiscuss how community recreation centres contribute to resilience and wellbeing within the communities they serve.\n\nPresenter: \n \n“Architecture is inherently philosophical and yet relentlessly pragmatic. Somewhere in the middle\, it defines how we work\, play\, and find delight in this world. That’s the good stuff.” \nPaul is interested in creating architecture that helps to define a strong regional identity. His work is focused on reconnecting people to their environments through the considered use of material\, form\, space\, and light. \nAs a Principal\, Paul enjoys the initial stages of concept design when site\, user\, and program are defined. His careful consideration of these critical decisions helps shape the outcome of the design and building process. Paul believes transformative change can happen at any scale\, and has led projects ranging from a children’s playhouse to a complex\, $160M community recreation centre. Paul finds particular delight in discovering and working in new communities throughout the province (big and small). \nHe has led several of our Tilt initiatives including the IDSwest stage design\, Coal Harbour Deck concept and the #MoreAwesomeNow Laneway Activation. \nPaul holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geography and a Masters of Architecture from the University of British Columbia and gained experience abroad in Switzerland and Russia\, where he designed an orphanage for a non-profit group. When not architecting\, he can be found exploring the remotest regions of British Columbia\, or hanging out at the cabin with his wife and three boys.

SUMMARY:Navigating Toward Zero: Transforming Community Recreation Facilities for a Sustainable Future - Thursday\, June 13\, 12:00-1:00pm EST
DESCRIPTION:Image: Neil Campbell Rowing Centre\nDesign Architect: MJMA Architecture & Design\nAssociate Architect: Raimondo + Associates Architects\nPhoto Credit: Scott Norsworthy\nWebinar | \nDesign Awards Series | Navigating Toward Zero: Transforming Community Recreation Facilities for a Sustainable Future \nThursday\, 13 June\, 2024 | 12:00 – 1:00 pm (EST)  \nProvider Name: AIA Canada Society\nProvider Number: 100100113\nCourse Number: 2024AIACS07\nCredit: 1 AIA Learning Unit (LU) \nRegistration Link | \nNavigating Toward Zero: Transforming Community Recreation Facilities for a Sustainable Future \nCourse Description | \nArena and aquatic facilities are often the most recognizable and significant public buildings in many communities. Given their high occupant loads\, long operational hours and inherently large volumes\, these buildings face significant challenges as our industry accepts the responsibility of steering the built world towards a zero-emissions future. These facilities must also sustain challenging interior environments that require specially treated air\, water\, and ice—all of which are delivering tightly regulated conditions regardless of exterior temperatures. This presentation will discuss strategies to lower embodied and operational carbon and reduce operational energy in this most essential of community building types. The session will focus on two case studies: the Western North York Community Centre\, on track to be one of Canada’s first Net-Zero Energy aquatics-based zero-carbon project\, and the King Township Recreation Centre\, which is the first facility in Canada combining arenas and aquatics to receive CaGBC’s Zero Carbon Building Design certification. We will describe the challenges and opportunities encountered on our path to a Zero Carbon future. \nLearning Objectives | \n\nUnderstand the practical and political challenges facing architects as we bring zero carbon principles to public projects.\nUnderstand ZCB Design and its relationship to architectural\, structural and mechanical systems for this project type.\nPinpoint various design strategies that were significant contributors to a ZCB design target.\nUnderstand lessons learned as industry standards for this level of performance evolve and improve.\n\nWe will use two case studies of projects in development to do this – the Western North York Community Centre and the ZCB-certified Township Wide Recreation Centre in King \nPresenters | \nJeanne Ng Jeanne Ng is a Senior Principal at MJMA Architecture & Design. She has been instrumental in furthering MJMA’s architecture and community engagement goals since 1997. She has taken a key role in many of the firm’s most notable community-focused projects that foster social cohesion\, such as the Regent Park (Pam McConnell) Aquatic Centre\, the Audley Recreation Centre & Library\, and the Wellesley Community Centre and St. James Town Library. A champion of sustainability\, she has led research initiatives like MJMA’s Embodied Carbon Benchmarking Study for community recreation centres\, and is the Project Principal on the Western North York Community Centre—which is on target to be one of Canada’s first Net-Zero aquatic-based community centres. \n  \nMarc Downing \nA Principal at MJMA\, Marc has been practicing his highly environmentally sensitive approach to architecture—first developed during the pursuit of a Bachelor of Environmental Studies and a Bachelor of Architecture\, both at the University of Waterloo. As a core member of MJMA’s community and recreation design team\, Marc has led arena projects across Canada. His projects are typically part of a larger public precinct\, forming relationships to existing buildings at the civic scale. Marc’s work is rooted in the idea that assembly space is always malleable; the challenges of multiple program types necessitate hybrid\, multi-use design solutions. He is the Project Principal on the King Township-Wide Recreation Complex which is the first public aquatic and arena facility to achieve Zero Carbon Design certification in Canada.
