Only by engaging end users as collaborators can architects develop deeper understanding and implement practical\, human-centered solutions for accessible architecture. This presentation\, led by Canadian architect\, author\, and activist Ron Wickman\, explores design methodologies that support the creation of a more accessible built environment. Drawing from his lived experience—growing up with a father who used a wheelchair—Ron introduces his Nine Concepts of Accessible Architecture\, a framework developed over three decades of specialized practice. Through this verbal presentation supported by case study examples\, participants will gain actionable insights into how accessibility can be embedded holistically into design. The session moves beyond minimum standards\, demonstrating how architecture can empower independence\, support dignity\, and offer flexible\, sustainable solutions that adapt to the diverse needs of users with disabilities. He set up his own Edmonton based practice in 1995\, and he specializes in providing consulting services for persons with disabilities and for projects focused on affording individuals with disabilities greater choices for independent movement. Ron is also committed to providing affordable\, accessible\, adaptable\, and healthy housing and has written many articles and two books on accessible design. He has been a guest speaker and participant in numerous sessions involving accessibility\, innovative housing\, and urban and community planning.
